Sriracha Spoiler

via

I LOVE Sriracha. I put it on a lot of my meals and relish in the sweet burn with every bite I take.

90% of you can relate.

Bubble burster... I have some bad news.
While it's great that Sriracha's ingredients haven't changed since 1983, it is unfortunate that two of the eight ingredients are preservatives.

Good news at the bottom!! But first:

Potassium Sorbate:
  • May cause headaches
  • May cause intestinal problems
  • May cause allergies
"Potassium salt of sorbic acid (E 200), which naturally occurs in the fruit o the European Mountain-ash (Sorbus Aucuparia), after which the acid is named. It is commercial produced by several different chemical pathways"

Sodium Bisulphite:
  • Frequent consumption may adversely affect the health
  • May cause headaches
  • May cause intestinal problems
  • Can cause stomach problems
  • May cause allergies
  • Decomposes vitamin B12
  • Not recommended for sensitive individuals and asthmatics
"Mono-sodium salt of sulfurous acid in the US sulphates are banned from many foods, including meat, because they make old products look fresh. They can cause bronchial problems, flushing, low blood pressure, tingling and anaphylactic shock. Avoid them if you suffer from bronchial asthma, cardiovascular or respiratory problems and emphysema."

I couldn't find a lot of info on these chemicals from google. Mostly everything on sodium bisulphite just lead me to more info sulphites in general and absolutely nothing concrete about their effects.

The information listed above is all from an app on my phone called e-codes. E-Codes gives references to all their material and what do you know, all of the sources are from the UK, Australia,  New Zealand and several other countries throughout the world.

Shocking.

More on e-codes and how it's a great app coming soon.

THE GOOD NEWS:

The store brand of Sriracha (right next to it in the isle) is free of any additives.   I've been using it for the past year and it's delicious!
